Gas Expansion at Any Cost

While Australia claims to be taking climate action, the government is quietly approving massive new gas projects that lock the country into fossil fuel dependence for decades. Despite mounting scientific evidence that gas is a climate disaster, politicians—backed by the Murdoch press—continue to push the lie that gas is a “transition fuel”.

A Rigged System
Gas corporations enjoy billions in government subsidies, yet pay next to nothing in tax. In 2021-22, major gas exporters like Chevron and ExxonMobil paid zero petroleum resource rent tax despite raking in billions from Australian gas. Meanwhile, Australians are told there’s a gas shortage and must pay soaring prices for their own resources.

Murdoch’s Gas Propaganda
The Murdoch press works overtime to keep the public misinformed. It attacks renewables while praising new gas projects as “energy security”—conveniently ignoring that most Australian gas is shipped offshore for corporate profits.

The Real Cost
New gas fields like the Beetaloo Basin and Scarborough project will add millions of tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere every year, wiping out any progress on emissions reduction. Traditional landowners fighting these projects face government-backed legal threats.

What Needs to Change?
End fossil fuel subsidies and force gas companies to pay their fair share.
Ban new gas projects and invest in renewables instead.
Hold media corporations accountable for spreading fossil fuel propaganda.
Australia’s gas cartel is robbing the public, wrecking the climate, and getting away with it—because the government and media let them. It’s time to call it what it is: a massive fossil fuel scam.
